Swanicoco Hydrating Waterfull, Snail Fermentation, and Fermentation Care SkinToner and Emulsion Review

With most product reviews, I take scattered notes on my phone and when my SO is watching a boring basketball game, I sit down, piece everything together into a review.

While reviewing my notes on the Hydrating Waterfull products, I couldn’t help but feel the resulting review/s might would be too repetitive to the reviews for the snail fermentation emulsion and the fermentation care line, so instead of reviewing this toner and emulsion individually, it seemed more productive to look at all 6 products together.

  • Extra Hydrating Waterfall Items: 5 months
  • Fermentation Snail Care Items: On and off for 18+ months for the emulsion and 14 months for the toner

Where does it fit in your routine?
I find the three toners to be on the thick side of toning products, so I use them after all other watery steps but before any serums. I apply the emulsions right before moisturizer.

Size and Price
Each bottle contains 120ml of product.

Packaging
All 6 products I have come with pump bottles. The fermentation care bottles are silver, plastic, and prevent any light exposure to the toner or emulsion. The fermentation snail care and extra hydrating waterfall items come in heftier glass bottles. The packaging of the fermentation snail toner and emulsion has changed in the past couple of months to a white, plastic, cyllindrical bottle. I haven’t used this new bottle yet but I have heard from multiple individuals that it’s terrible. With all 6 bottles, I’ve found it nearly impossible to get the product at the very bottom of the bottles.

Fragrance
None of these products contain fragrance qua fragrance, but all three have a light-to-medium scent due to the various botanical extracts it contains.

  • Fermentation Care – Generic floral. Slightly old lady-ish. This is my least favorite scent of the three
  • Extra Hydrating Waterfall – Musky lavender scent with tiny hint of peppermint at the end. I usually dislike lavender scented things but I’m quite fond of this
  • Fermentation Snail Care – Smells like rose, but in a not-so-sweet, not-too-floral way. My favorite fragrance of the three!

Color and texture
Toners in order of thickness: Fermentation / Fermentation Snail, Extra Hydrating Waterfall. Fermentation and Fermentation Snail toners have nearly identical viscosity. The Fermentation Snail toner has a slightly white / cloudy appearance. The other two are clear. None of the toners are sticky by themselves, but when used with other glycerin-containing toners and products, they do contribute to stickiness. My rule of thumb is when using multiple toners, let these be the last / thickest.
Emulsions in order of thickness: Fermentation, Fermentation Snail, Extra Hydrating Waterfall. Again, the Fermentation and Fermentation Snail products are very similar in thickness. Both are very watery, silky, and just a joy to use, texturally, but I think the Fermentation emulsion is a tad thinner. The Extra Hydrating Waterfall emulsion is the most cream-like in texture. If you have oily, combo, or even normal skin, the Extra Hydrating Waterfall emulsion might be emollient enough to forego a standalone moisturizer.

OBSERVATIONS / GENERAL THOUGHTS

At this point, I’ve spent a lot of time with all of these products. 4 of the 6 bottles are empty and the other 2 are nearly so.

I believe the fermentation care and fermentation snail care lines would work well for all skin types but the extra hydrating waterfall line is definitely created with dry skin in mind. I don’t think the toner would be problematic for oilier skin types, but the emulsion is quite rich.

All 6 products provide good hydration and emollience. Generally speaking, I use and like the emulsions more than I do the toners. I have dry skin and emulsions are a very useful transition step for me to use before moisturizer to help reinforce moisture. There also are not as many nice emulsions on the market as there are toners, so whereas I have somewhere between 10-20 toners in my stash at all times to choose from, I only have 5 or so emulsions and these ones from Swanicoco are some of my favorites.

The exception to that preference is the Fermentation Care toner. This toner goes well above and beyond what I expect a toner. In addition to providing a boost in hydration, it also gives my skin a beautiful luminescence and healthy glow. It outperforms most first essences – which I regard as more of a “treatment” product than toners – I have used. What’s interesting is all the ingredients in the toner are also in the emulsion, yet I don’t see nearly the same brightening effects from the emulsion. Maybe the ingredients work better in a watery delivery system?

The product that brings me the most joy is definitely the Fermentation Snail Care emulsion. As mentioned, I’ve finished 2 bottles at this point. Every time I use it, I fall back in love with the scent and silky texture. There are so, SO few products that maintain their appeal after a few weeks of use and so to me, this emulsion is something special. The Fermentation Care toner has a very similar texture, but I’m significantly less fond of the scent. I have not yet purchased my third bottle of the Fermentation Snail Care emulsion as of yet – the packaging reformulation makes me apprehensive – but come Autumn I probably will.

Hopefully this breakdown gives you a good idea about these 6 products and how they compare with each other. If you have any questions, please ask in the comments! I have a lot of thoughts and specific details I can share if there’s interest!

I tried the Swanicoco Fermentation Care Skintoner (Silver) and I also agree that it gives my skin a healthy glow and I do notice a difference from when I was using Missha FTE.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

I like the look of the bottle for its. its very classy. You might want to mention to them that the bottle is not very effective. When I press the pump, the product will drip straight down and I need to slip my hand inside so that the product doesn’t drip into it (leave a residual and possibly grow bacteria)

I’m not happy about the bottle change at all. If it’s as bad as people say it is I can’t imagine not decanting it into something more functional, which is just a huge hassle

Thank you for this comparison review. It’s so hard sometimes to choose between similar products when they’re reviewed separately (and all favorably).

Based on your previous reviews, I’ve tried the Snail Care Emulsion (which I totally love– perfect weight & feel for a light moisturizer) and the Fermentation Care Serum (was searching for a new Serum step). Unfortunately for me, I think I may be sensitive to whatever ingredient is used to achieve the serum thickness/texture, as nearly all serums cause surface breakouts for me. I did like the other effects I saw, so now would like to go back and try the skintoner of that line. My skin just loves all watery steps and have had good results with lots of layers there (have been *loving* the Matsuyama ceramide light type toner).

I’m sad to hear about the packaging change for the Snail Care Emulsion, though. I’d really appreciated the (easily recyclable) glass.

I’ve been doing more comparative reviews lately – it feels more useful to talk about products in the context of similar products so I’m glad you find it useful! I really love the matsuyama ceramide light toner as well. I’ve been testing a few other toners and potions and none of them quite measure up. I just wish it came in a bigger container because I tend to go through it rather quickly.

Thankyou for your verry detailed review!
Would you say that the Swanicoco waterfall emulsion would be a potential pore clogging product for people that get them easily?
Doubting between the three, but my skin is in need of some water/hydration.

It’s hard to say. The emulsion isn’t oily, so it’s not really rich in the way a lot of rich creams are. It’s just got a lot of glycerin. Have you ever used a sheet mask that left you skin kind of tacky/sticky? That’s an extreme example of excess glycerin so if you have experience with that, it might be a good gauge of the likelihood of clogging pores. Hope this helps somewhat!
