Skin Watchers Original Facial Oil Review

This is one of the many face oils I picked up at the end of last year when trying to combat excessive winter skin dryness. This is not one of my favorites and I wasn’t going to review it but I have a funny (ish) story regarding it so I wanted to share. But first –

This oil gets so many things right – it is thin, fluid, easy to apply, and will not weigh on your skin as many oils do yet is still an effective emollient. If I want to use a face oil in the AM, I almost always mix it into a cream or ampoule because otherwise it leaves too much residue. This oil is a rare exception. In fact, after I had finished the two week testing phase of this oil, I had packaged it back into its box and hid it at the very bottom of my skincare drawer, thinking it wouldn’t get any use. To my surprise, I actually found myself digging for it quite frequently in mornings because sometimes I needed the emolliency a face oil delivers in a texture that wouldn’t leave my face looking like an oil slick.

In short, the blend of oils Skin Watchers came up with is really lovely and I’m a big fan of how it fells on my skin. This makes it all the more upsetting that the company then felt the need to add fragrance and RUIN EVERYTHING.

skinwatchers oil 2

I was a little surprised by the lack of fragrant essential oils or added fragrance. I’m not familiar with pelargonium graveolens flowers, but google tells me they are geraniums that smell like roses, and I can soundly say this oil smells nothing like roses, geraniums, or any other flower I know of. It took me awhile to figure out what it smells like, but I think I have it figured out.

A few weeks ago, a coworker and I were working in a conference room when she got up to draw something on the white board. I caught wind of something that smelled vaguely like musky body odor, but didn’t think too much of it. However, as our meeting went on, I kept getting whiffs of this bizarre smell! I knew she worked out in the mornings, so I thought maybe she didn’t have time to shower this particular morning, but her hair looked way too clean for that to have been true. Then, while trying to discretely inch my seat further and further away from her, I then tried to think back if she ate anything pungent at lunch that might be responsible for the smell when I realized I recognize this smell. That morning, I had applied some of this face oil onto my upper arms because they were developing a few dry, rough patches, and I was smelling the face oil whenever I moved my arms in a particular way! I was mortified and tried to keep as much distance between me and everyone else for the rest of the day.

So yeah. In small amounts, this oil smells like something generic and nature-y, but in slightly higher concentrations, it smells like someone who’s a little sweaty. To be fair, I did make it about halfway through the bottle until this happened, so an easy way to avoid any social embarrassment is to not use so much, but I still feel like NO skincare product should smell anything like BO!

The Takeaway

The blend of oils in this facial oil come together to form a thin, fluid, and emollient oil that is very easy to work with. Unfortunately, it smells like body odor in higher concentrations!

It is, isn’t it? I had no clue how to score this one because the scent is pretty faint and its otherwise a nice oil, you know? But mannnnn I don’t even know what to do with it now because it’s not going anywhere on my body!
